Description

The Science Vocabulary Activities included in this resource will help your students learn the valuable skill of breaking unfamiliar terms down into their roots, prefixes, and suffixes to determine their meaning.

You receive BOTH print and digital paperless resources . . . perfect for in-class instruction, distance learning, flipped classrooms, or make-up work.

Strange, new vocabulary words can be one of the most challenging aspects of learning science. If you’re tired of hearing groans and seeing blank looks EVERY time you introduce a new science vocabulary word, then you need to try these vocabulary “break it down” activities.

It’s a WIN-WIN because students are no longer intimidated by science-y words and you can move more quickly through new content in the future!

Here’s a look at the 3 Activities:

  1. A whole-class warm-up activity using a HUGE word and showing students how to break it down into parts, most of which they probably already know.
  2. “Break it Down” worksheet with 10 common science-y words for students to break down into parts to determine their meaning. A “Science Roots, Prefixes, and Suffixes” glossary is included!
  3. A mini-poster activity that requires students to concoct their own “crazy” words and create a mini-poster to explain the origin of the word and its definition.

DIGITAL OPTIONS for all of these activities are included!

My favorite time to use this lesson is during the first two weeks of school in my Biology and Anatomy & Physiology classes. But it’s a good vocabulary refresher any time and even works well as a sub plan.

5 Files are included:

  1. Read First: Contact information, overview of activities, links to digital resources on GoogleDrive, Teacher’s Guide, image and font credits, and terms of use.
  2. Scientific Roots, Prefixes, and Suffixes Glossary that can be used throughout the year
  3. Science Vocabulary Word “Break it Down” Worksheet
  4. Crazy Word Mini-Poster Activity
  5. Optional, Editable, Scoring Rubric for Mini-Poster

The mini-posters are my favorite! My students always amaze me with the things they come up with and their illustrations are awesome. I’ve even shared these with parents on Open House night.

I’m a HUGE fan of vocabulary-building activities, so you’ll see a variety of these in my store. Here are a few you might like:
